Summertime Cuties Hat Pattern crochet pattern - detailed view of completed project

Worked in the round with simple increases, these hats are great for practicing circular shaping and small amigurumi-style pieces. The pattern is written for worsted/4 weight yarn and a G/4.0mm hook with clear counts for small, medium and large sizes.

Why You'll Love This Summertime Cuties Hat Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it turns simple crochet basics into whimsical, wearable art that makes people smile. I designed the pieces to be quick to stitch yet full of personality, so you get satisfying progress and an adorable result. I enjoy the versatility—changing colors or tiny details completely transforms the character of each hat. Sewing the small features is relaxing for me and I love how each hat becomes unique with little embellishments like pearl seeds or embroidered mouths. Sharing these makes me happy because theyre perfect gifts for kids and adults who love playful accessories.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customize these hats by simply changing yarn colors; try pastel shades for a softer, baby-friendly look or neon brights for a playful statement.

You can adjust the overall size by swapping yarn weight and hook size—use bulky yarn with a large hook for a chunky adult hat or a lighter weight yarn for mini keychain versions.

I often add embroidered faces or tiny felt accessories to make each hat more unique; experiment with different eye shapes or mouth expressions for personality.

For a different texture, try working the edging in a contrasting stitch such as shell stitch or picot edge to give the brim a lacy or ruffled effect.

Want a reversible effect? Make two crown rows in different colors and fold the brim to show the inner color as a trim for a fresh look.

Swap the pearl seeds for small embroidered French knots or seed beads glued on for different strawberry finishes depending on availability of materials.

I sometimes add a chin strap with a small button for toddler hats so they stay on during playtime—test fit and size the strap carefully for comfort.

Mix and match ears, wings or stems from different character patterns (for example, frog eyes on the bee hat) to invent your own hybrid creature hats.

If youd like a sturdier brim, try blocking the finished hat or lining the brim with interfacing or a thin felt circle sewn inside to maintain shape.

Use safety eyes for durability on adult-display hats, or embroidered/felt eyes for baby hats to keep them safe and soft—always choose attachment styles appropriate for the recipients age.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

✗ Skipping stitch markers during rounds can make it hard to track the start of a round; mark the first stitch of every round to keep counts accurate. ✗ Not checking gauge before starting leads to hats that are too large or small; make a small swatch in the round and adjust hook size as needed. ✗ Overstuffing small pieces like cheeks or stems will distort their shape; stuff lightly and gradually to keep pieces flat and neat. ✗ Forgetting to tie off and leave a long tail for sewing will make attachment harder later; leave long tails for all small parts for secure sewing. ✗ Using yarn for tiny seeds results in messy small details; use doubled thread for sewing on pearl seeds for a tidier finish.

Info :

The small hats have a circumference of 13-14 inches and is a good size for your typical newborn! The medium sized hats have a circumference of 18-19 inches and will fit a 1-3 Year old child. My son is 3 and this size fits him just fine! The Large size has a circumference of 20.5-22 inches and has fit every adult I have tried it on thus far. Keep in mind that the nature of crochet fabric means it will stretch and have a bit of give to it.

Info :

Feel Free to try on the hat and decide if you need a deeper crown fit. Just add more of the crown row. Edging rows do not affect how well the hat will sit on your head but may slightly obstruct your view if you make the hat too deep.

Info :

For adding the frogs mouth I had just slip stitched through the hat. You can also just sew it on. It takes me a few attempts for every frog mouth to sit right!

Info :

Again all the sewing is down to preference, besides how the eyes are sewn together that is! Stuff the stem with leftover yarn or fiber fill before sewing it on. I tend to sew in and out of the stitches rather than out and around them, just to keep it clean. For the strawberry hat seeds I just use matching thread doubled and sew them on wherever I think looks good. I tie each one individually and don't weave in the thread. After trying to use yarn for the seeds.. just trust me when I say this is easier and looks more tidy! Feel free to contact me on etsy if you have any questions and make sure to use my photos as reference!

Assembly Instructions

  • Sew the beak to the front of the chick hat using the long tail left when tying off; fold the beak in half as instructed and sew through both layers for a neat, flat finish.
  • Position and sew cheeks and eyes before attaching the crown or edging; pin them in place and check symmetry then tack down with small stitches and secure tails inside the hat.
  • For the strawberry hat, sew pearl beads individually using doubled matching thread and tie each bead off separately without weaving in the thread to keep seeds tidy.
  • Attach the frog stem to the top center of the strawberry hat after stuffing lightly; sew through the stem stitches in and out to anchor cleanly and hide the sewing beneath the leaf points.
  • When assembling, pin each component (eyes, cheeks, beak, wings) to the hat and try the hat on the intended wearer if possible to ensure proper placement before permanent sewing.

Important Notes

  • 💡Ch2 does not count as a stitch at any point in this pattern—keep that in mind when counting rounds and stitch totals.
  • 💡Check your gauge: 4 dc and 2 rows per inch is the guide; make a round swatch and adjust hook size if necessary to hit the correct measurements.
  • 💡Weave in ends and leave long tails for sewing small parts; finishing as you go will keep assembly quick and tidy.
  • 💡Stuff smaller pieces lightly and the stem with leftover yarn or fiber fill before sewing to prevent lumps or misshapen attachments.
