About This Eira Owl Amigurumi Pattern

This pattern creates a small, stylized snowy owl amigurumi named Eira, featuring a cozy striped scarf and a tiny envelope with a wax seal. The design uses worsted weight yarn and worked-in-the-round shaping to create a rounded body and defined features. You will make separate pieces — eyes, body/head, wings, beak, tail, feet, scarf and accessories — then assemble and embellish for a finished character full of personality.

Techniques include magic ring, increases, decreases, working in BLO/FLO and simple embroidery for talons and body markings. The pattern is written in US terms and uses continuous rounds unless specified.

Why You'll Love This Eira Owl Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it combines sweet, compact shaping with charming little details like the striped scarf and tiny envelope that really give the character personality. I enjoy how the separate pieces come together during assembly — the placement of the eyes, beak and wings completely transforms the simple rounds into a lifelike little owl. The pattern also leaves room for creativity: swap scarf colors, change eye sizes, or embroider different marks on the belly for your own spin. Making Eira is calming and rewarding; each small stitch builds a delightful finished toy I love to give as gifts.

Switch Things Up

I love how customizable this pattern is — change the scarf colours to match a team or holiday and the personality of Eira changes instantly.

To make a larger version, use a bulkier yarn and a larger hook; to make a mini keychain version, use fingering or sport weight with a smaller hook.

I often swap the 12mm safety eyes for embroidered eyes for a softer, baby-safe toy version.

Embroider different belly marks (V shapes, hearts, or stars) with contrast yarn to give each owl a signature look.

Try using variegated yarn for the body for a speckled, textured effect that mimics natural feathers.

Add a tiny hat, bow, or glasses by crocheting small shapes and sewing them on for seasonal or themed owls.

Switch the envelope colour and make little notes inside for a surprise detail that makes the toy extra special as a gift.

I sometimes add a thin wire inside the wings or tail for a posable version that can perch in different poses.

Mix yarn textures — a fluffy boucle for the body and smooth yarn for accessories — to create tactile contrast and interest.

I recommend trying different scarf widths or patterns (stripes, ribbing or tassels) to customize how warm and cozy your owl looks.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

✗ Skipping stitch markers during continuous rounds leads to lost beginning-of-rounds; place a marker at the start of every round to avoid counting errors. ✗ Closing the magic ring too tightly before inserting safety eyes can prevent proper placement; close the MR loosely so the safety eye post can be inserted before tightening. ✗ Overstuffing the head and body creates bulging stitches and distorts shaping; stuff gradually and shape as you go to maintain smooth curvature. ✗ Not counting stitches after shaping rounds results in mismatched stitch counts for assembly; recount after each increase/decrease round to ensure correct stitch totals.

— Notes :

Infos :

Thank you so much for choosing to purchase my pattern! A few things to note before you get started: This pattern is written using US terminology. Unless specified otherwise, the pattern is worked in continuous rounds. As such, stitch markers should be used to mark the beginning of each round. I have used { } to indicate stitch sequences that need to be repeated, followed by the number of times (eg. {SC 2, INC} 2x). If there isn’t a number specified after a stitch (eg. SC) it means only one stitch is to be worked that way. I recommend using an invisible decrease (using FLO) any time a decrease is called for.

Info :

Any weight yarn may be substituted, but your safety eyes, hook size, and the yarn amount needed will have to be increased or decreased accordingly as well. The gauge is not really important with this pattern, however, you want to make sure your work is tight enough that there are no visible holes otherwise filler will show through. For reference, using the recommended materials, my gauge is approximately 4.5 stitches & 4.5 rows = 1".

— Beak :

Step 1 :

Using BLACK - Leaving a long tail for sewing, Ch 4. SlSt in 2nd Ch from hook. HDC. In last Ch, DC, SC, DC. Turn. Working on the other side of the chain *skipping the loop the previous 3 sts were worked in*, HDC, SlSt to last Ch. (7sts)

Info :

Fasten off with a tail for sewing. Pinch the tip of the beak (SlSt side) closed and sew back and forth a couple times to secure the point in place. Weave in end.

— Tail :

Round 1 :

Ch 6. SC in 2nd Ch from hook. SC 3. In last Ch, SC 3. Turn (7sts)

Round 7 :

{DEC, SC 3} 2x (8sts)

Info :

Fasten off with a tail for sewing. Because you worked in the round there will be a low side and a high side; take note of this for assembly, as the low side will be sewn on facing down so the tail is angled correctly.

— Wax Seal :

Step 1 :

Using RED - In MR, SC 4 (4sts)

Info :

Pull ring closed tightly, and fasten off with a small tail for sewing.

— Envelope :

Step 1 :

Round 3-14 :

SC once in each stitch (14sts)

Info :

Your goal here is to make a 3x3" square, so depending on your gauge you may need to go up/down a hook size, adjust the chain length, or add/subtract rows to correctly achieve this. Once the proper size is reached, fasten off with another tail for sewing.

— Scarf :

Step 1 :

Ch 4. SC in 2nd Ch from hook, SC 2 (3sts)

Round 2-4 :

Ch 1. SC once in each stitch (3sts) *Change yarn colour*

Round 5-7 :

Ch 1, SC once in each stitch (3sts) *Change yarn colour back to the first colour used*

Info :

Repeat your colour change rows until your scarf is around 13" long, or long enough to wrap around the owls neck at least 1.5x. Mine ended up being 17 coloured sections, and 51 rows, but yours may need to be adjusted depending on your gauge. I worked in colour block rows of 3, but you can alter your colour changes however you like. Weave in all the ends. I sewed a loop on one end, big enough to pull the scarf through, to secure it on her.

— Assembly :

Info :

Starting with the eyes, position the patches so that the DC side of the yellow is facing towards the outside edge of her head. Leaving the top section for last, and starting at the inside corner of the eye, sew 2/3 of the way around the patch. When you get to the outside corner on the top, sew through the patch on a downward angle towards your starting point, leaving the top edge able to fold down slightly (as illustrated in the photo below). Fasten off and weave in ends.

Info :

Moving onto the beak, position it so that the top of the beak is level with the bottom of the safety eyes. Sew 2 stitches on one side, across the top, and 2 stitches on the other side to secure 1/3 of the beak to your owl's face, leaving the tip free so your owl will be able to carry her mail! Fasten off and weave in ends.

Info :

Embroider a few small "V" shapes onto the front of her body using grey yarn.

Info :

For the wings, position them so they abut the bottom edge of your owls head, are centre on her body when viewed from the side, and are slightly tilted back. I stitched only through the layer closest to her body, and only secured the top, but you can sew it on however you're most comfortable with. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Info :

For the feet (important - make sure to attach the feet before the tail, otherwise it may not be freestanding as intended), they should be positioned one row over from the starting MR of the body, and centre when viewed from the side. Sew around the final SC round of the "leg" only, leaving the toes free. Fasten off and weave in ends. Once the feet are attached, you can embroider on talons.

Info :

Moving onto the tail, position it in the centre of the owl's back, 7-8 rows up from the starting MR on the bottom of the body. Make sure the low side (from working in the round) is facing down, and the position of the tail allows it to function as a sort of kickstand, so your owl can stand on its own.

Info :

For the envelope, lay it flat with the yarn tails on the left & right, or left & bottom (depending on how many rows you needed to make the piece square, your tails could be in either of these placements). Fold the left section in, and the bottom up, and whip stitch down the seam to the left corner of the envelope. Fasten off.

Info :

Fold the right section in, and whip stitch it to the bottom section, down the seam to the right corner. Fasten off, and weave in the ends. Fold the top section down, and sew the wax seal onto the tip of the envelope closure.

Info :

The top of the envelope may have a tendency to stay open, so I recommend putting a small stitch somewhere in the middle of the top flap, and through to the front of the envelope, to stop this from happening.

Info :

& You're done! Now sit back and enjoy your adorable creation!

Assembly Instructions

  • Position each eye patch so the DC side of the yellow is facing outward; starting at the inside corner, sew 2/3 of the way around the patch and leave the top edge able to fold down slightly for depth.
  • Sew the beak so the top is level with the bottom of the safety eyes; secure with 2 stitches on each side and leave the tip free so the owl can carry the envelope.
  • Attach wings so they abut the bottom edge of the head and sit centered on the body from the side; stitch only through the layer closest to the body and secure the top edge.
  • Attach feet one row over from the starting MR of the body, centered when viewed from the side; sew around the final SC round of the leg only so the toes remain free, then embroider talons.
  • Place tail centered on the back 7-8 rows up from the starting MR; sew with the low side facing down so the tail functions as a kickstand allowing the owl to stand.

Important Notes

  • 💡Use stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round for consistent shaping across continuous rounds.
  • 💡Stuff the lower body firmly first and stuff the head gradually while closing to maintain a smooth shape without lumps.
  • 💡Attach the feet before sewing on the tail to ensure the owl will stand freestanding as intended.
  • 💡Count stitches after every increase or decrease round to ensure correct stitch totals for assembly and symmetry.
  • 💡Weave in ends and tidy tails before final assembly to keep seams neat and avoid visible yarn tails.
